Sorry for the lack of updates

Sorry I haven't been getting more posted lately. Got a new baby due any day now, and my evenings are filled up with painting nurseries, going to furniture stores and so on. This'll be our third - and first son. Already got two girls :). I wrote a sonnet for the last one, but not sure that a boy would ultimately appreciate that :).

Gnomeo and Juliet

'Gnomeo' Doth Have a Producer:

I really want Disney to do a version of The Tempest. I think it's got all the makings -- a young girl as the heroine, her relationship with her dad, bad guys who try to take over the island, comic relief, and magical creatures. But alas, I know of no plans.

However, they are working with Elton John's production coming on "Gnomeo and Juliet, an animated version of Romeo and Juliet that takes place in "the world of tacky garden gnomes." That's different. But I'll happily take my kids to it, if they manage to make it rated G.

Moons of Uranus

My friend over at the Hubble Telescope sent me an email this morning about the moons of Uranus. Apparently such things are named by theme. No big surprise that Shakespeare Characters is a typical theme (I tend to name my computers that way). What's interesting is the actual choice of characters:

ARIEL UMBRIEL TITANIA OBERON MIRANDA CORDELIA OPHELIA BIANCA
CRESSIDA DESDEMONA JULIET PORTIA ROSALIND BELINDA PUCK CALIBAN SYCORAX
PROSPERO SETEBOS STEPHANO TRINCULO FRANCISCO MARGARET

New: FERDINAND PERDITA MAB CUPID

I struggled to find a pattern and could not - for instance, when and why did Cressida get split from Troilus? My friend tells me that it's done by vote, so perhaps they just randomly select and approve them. I love that they got Setebos in there, that's certainly not a name you see on most Shakespearean character lists.

Digging Shakespeare

I only link to this story because "Digging Shakespeare" is what I want to call my book if I ever get around to writing it. :) Actually this story does have a few interesting bits -- I did not realize that "Will in the World" was at all controversial, for instance.

The Tragik Historie of William Gates

The Tragik Historie of William Gates:

Two of my favorite loves: Shakespeare, and bashing Bill Gates. "A drum, a drum! Bill Gates doth come!"

GATES
By my troth I know I am the ruler of BASIC.
But how of operating systems?
Duke Kildall lives yet,
And CP/M doth hold much sway o'er the lands
And to be Monopolist! Yea, that
Stands not within the prospect of belief
Speak, and do say from whence
You owe this strange intelligence.

You may have to know something about the history of the PC wars to really appreciate this, but it's good stuff.

Who Killed Christopher Marlowe?

The New York Review of Books: Who Killed Christopher Marlowe?:

Ooooo, I wish I had time to sit and digest this all right now. It's so rare that you get good quality articles about Marlowe. And by Stephen Greenblatt no less (he of "Will in the World : How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare" fame).
